The Election

My limited research on blogs tells me that every single one of them is required to comment routinely on the political landscape.  I believe there is a memo somewhere that is sent to blog owners informing them of the rule.  I’m not sure what happens to those who disobey but I think it has something to do with an uncomfortable chair, a damp noodle, Chinese finger-cuffs, and a midget.  In my case The Misses has gotten involved.  She thinks I need to make my feelings on the election known to the world in order to do my part in adverting a tragic mistake on the part of the voting public.  Well, if the news is to be believed the election has already been decided and this blog can only be used as an, “I told you so” in four years time.

So what do I think about these two candidates?  They are both bad.  We have a “Republican” who will spend more money than Imelda Marcos at Payless, and a “Democrat” who thinks Lennin was a fiscal conservative.  Our choices are leftist or super-leftist.

Obama scares me, and here are a few reasons why:

Healthcare.  He wants to nationalize it.  There are some interim steps in there but the end result is nationalization.  I think healthcare in this country is a mess, and I don’t have a good idea of how to fix it.  But I cannot think of one thing the government runs well.  If you can think of an example please forward it to me.  Government agencies are usually the butt of jokes, and the bigger they are the more useless they become.  When was the last time you thought the DMV was helpful?  When was the last time you looked forward to dealing with the Social Security office?  When was the last time you said to yourself, “Everything will be OK now, FEMA is here”?  Bigger government and more regulations are not the answer.  Specifically I don’t understand why any small business would offer healthcare under Obama’s plan.  Why should a small business owner incur the cost when employees can get their own coverage in the government plan?  When pressed about this in one of the debates Obama said small business owners would be give tax credits to help them “do the right thing”.  Do the right thing?  We should also hold hands and sing peace songs while we’re at it.

Taxes.  Obama has engaged in class warfare plain and simple.  Now I’m an opponent of the whole Income Tax idea in the first place.  It will be the subject of a blog one day I’m sure.  The idea of taxing the penalizing the rich to help the poor just doesn’t work.  Redistribution of wealth is a bad idea.  I say again, redistribution of wealth is a bad, bad idea.  It stifles growth, kills incentive, and demoralizes individuals.  There is a word for this taxation system, socialism, and it doesn’t work.  Originally the income tax was passed because Congress promised it would only be used to tax the rich.  Now just about everyone pays income tax.  Governments are greedy, it constantly takes more and more the feed the beast of bureaucracy.  The $250 thousand number hasn’t even lasted 12 months.  Already it’s slipping down to $200 (as stated in Obama’s primetime infomercial) or $150 as stated by Biden.  Just like the income tax it will continue to drop until everyone is affected.

Iraq.  I don’t know if I agree Obama here, it depends on which version he’s supporting this week.  If Obama settles on his promise to pull everyone out within a few months, I do not concur.  If he settles on the promise to listen to generals on the ground and follow their advice, then I agree.  I just don’t know which policy he will follow.  Obama claims that he’s gonna save a ton of money ($10 billion a month) by pulling troops out and this will help pay for some of his programs.  But he also says he needs to deploy those same troops to Afghanistan.  Did I miss something; did we get a discount from Afghanistan and deploying troops there?

Education.  I actually like most of Obama’s ideas here.  I don’t know how he will pay for it, but I like the ideas.  The only thing I disagree with him on is the vouchers.  Vouchers work, and I support them. But you can’t agree on everything, so overall I think this is the one area where Obama has a pretty good plan.

Personal associations.  Obama is a mess.  You know the names Rezko, Ayers, Jones Jr., Khalidi, and Rev. Wright.  One or two you could overlook as a bad idea, but put them together and it starts to make you wonder.  If this guy knew he was gonna run for president one day he should have distanced himself from them a long time ago.  I’m not running for any public office but I can tell you beyond the shadow of a doubt none of the people in my extended circle of friends are unrepentant terrorists, white supremacists, or embezzlers.  I can’t remember a politician who had this many questionable friends since Gary Heart took a ride on the “Love Boat”.

Voting record.  Present?  Present?  Seriously?  There’s a term for that it’s called chickensh*t.  If you have problems with legislation vote it down.

After re-reading this blog I realized I could have probably save myself some time and cut and pasted it from Limbaugh or Hannity or one of those guys.  Those fellas are entertainers, not real people.  Here’s my opinion in a nutshell (and it took 940 words to get there) I’m worried Obama’s policies will send us into a deep recession.  Obama’s policies mirror those of President Hoover and that didn’t work out too well for the country.

So much to say... but do agree... are you surprised? Anyway, baby is crying so have to comment later but why don't you see which candidate you match up with at :

http://www.dehp.net/candidate/

It was built before the primaries so it includes the party nominees.

Hey Brian - It's the Hers. Hope everyone is well.

I do have to say that as I started reading your entry, I thought based on the "They are both bad." comment that you would also post cons of McCain/Palin (because there are so many). If the claim is they are both bad then make a fair argument.

Though I like you (wink, wink) I have to respectfully disagree. I am realistic in that I understand there will never be a candidate that will believe, see and feel everything as I do but I want to pick someone who can see beyond themselves and relate to people even if they don't share the same experiences. I want someone who is smarter than me and knows when he doesn’t know that he can humble himself and surround himself with people who do.

I don't buy the Obama/Socialist argument and it would seem the majority of American's also do not. The reason being is that I come from a family that was helped by the system which allowed me to be he person I am today.

I can proudly say that Kong and I are part of the 5% income earners that will not benefit under Obama's tax plan but I welcome it. I can afford to pay more so I should. I have always believed that what you give always comes back ten fold.

My father and mother came to the United States as immigrants fleeing persecution from a war that was kept secret to protect the US. They came with three children under 4, an extended family, $17 to their name and the clothes on their back.

My parent's scratched and clawed to survive and they did not do it alone. With government assistance, education assistance, and government provided healthcare my parents laid the foundation to give their children a better future. We are all better people because of this. All of my parents children are college educated and are extremely successful.

Not everyone is looking for a hand out. There will always be those people who exist but there is nothing you can do to incent those people to be different, even if you eliminate "hand-outs", to them. If you chose not to help those in need you give up on so many who deserve the help. Our system is broken but to claim Socialism is just ignorant. You don’t trash a system that isn’t completely broken. You fix it. I don’t know how but I believe that someone (as I mentioned above, someone smarter than me) can.

McCain has no idea what middle class families go through, what their life is like or the struggles they face. He is out of touch with what most American's are experiencing in their daily life. His definition of someone who is not "rich" is anyone who makes less than $3MM. Really? Of course the fundamental of the economy is sound to McCain. He has money.

I do have to admit that Kong and I have not been affect by the economy the way most people have. We have not had to adjust our life style, down sized or re-evaluate. We have not stopped contributing to our girl’s college fund or our personal investments but we know that there are many people who need help. We don't need McCain's tax but we know everyday Americans need Obama’s. To be clear, Obama is not increasing taxes for the rich, he’s just not going to renew the tax cuts that Bush gave them. There is so much frivolous spending, war spending aside. Obama has pledged to look at the federal budget line by line to get rid of wasteful spending. That alone will allow redirection of some funds. Read Obama’s plan. Neutral sources (cut out Fox News and MSNBC) have said that Obama’s plan is the most sound. Many Republican’s are now even endorsing his plan. Just remember that all claims made about Obama’s plan can be said of McCain’s. McCain is not even proposing troop withdrawals and look at his claims of what he will do as President. Both candidates are making a lot of claims but analyst say McCain’s plan will cost billions more than Obama’s. Factcheck.org, the only nonpartisan source of information.

Don't even get me started on healthcare. I have a pre-existing condition and under McCain's plan no one would cover me and if they do it would cost me an arm and a leg. McCain's is so out of touch that he has no idea how expensive healthcare is. $5,000 doesn't cover jack. My health plan through my fortune 100 company costs more than that.

Just one last point. As a woman who has worked hard to earn respect in my profession and my community, I take great offense to Sarah Palin. John McCain showed poor judgment when picking her. I'm sure she is a nice person but she does not hold any of the same views or beliefs as I do. I'm afraid of the world my girls will inherit. I want them to have the right to chose for their own bodies. I work very hard teach them to be socially responsible, to help those in need and to love their earth, that we are the keepers of what God has given us and to honor him by caring for it. I shutter to think of what would happen should McCain win, die and Palin take over. Really, global warming not caused by man? I could go on and on.

I'll leave with you part of my blog entry from October 9.

"Taylor (8yrs) and Ayden (5yrs) watched the first 30 minutes of the second 2008 Presidential debate with us. Taylor brought up a specific question that was asked. She repeated the question nearly word for word then she repeated Obama's response and captured everything he conveyed. The gist of what Obama said was that he fundamentally disagreed with Sen. McCain on the economy. That for many people, wages and income have flat-lined and it is getting harder and harder to save and to retire. That a tax cut for 95% of working Americans would help those who are working two jobs, people who are not spending enough time with their kids, because they are struggling to make ends meet.

"Mom, I just felt like Barack Obama really understood the question and what is happening to people. He knows what people are going through right now with the economy." Then she got really quite and I could tell by her voice that she was about to cry. I asked why she felt so sad and she said to me, "I'm sad that parents don't have as much time to spend with their children because they are working so hard. I know what all those children feel like and how sad it must be for them. I'm just glad to know that Barack Obama understands where children are coming from and how they are being affected by this." What she was trying to confirm was if what Obama had said would hold true for our family, if things are harder now, if we would be spending less time with them in light of the economy and if so the thought of having a President who could relate to children was very important for her."

I did the questionnaire suggested by Louella. My top 4 candidates (Guilliani, Hunter, Huckabee, McCain), lots of candidates in between, and my botton 4 (Obama, Gravel, Paul, Kucinich. Interesting little website. I voted today and I according to my answers I voted correctly.
